Tips for Refilling Inkjet Cartridges

Refilling inkjet cartridges is a fantastic way to save big money on the cost of printer ink. No matter what type of inkjet cartridge you have, it can be refilled. Different printers require different refill kits, because even though all inkjet printers work in much the same way, designs and sizes of cartridges can be quite different. Always have your printer model handy when shopping for a refill kit.

There are several different types of uni-color cartridges and multi-color cartridges. Uni-color, as its name suggests, is a cartridge that prints in only one color -- usually black. Multi-color means that the cartridge prints in color. Usually, multi-color cartridges contain blue, red, and yellow tanks from which every color imaginable can be made. In these two color categories, there are various types of inkjet cartridges. All inkjet cartridges are refilled using a syringe type tool which injects the cartridge with the new ink.

Let's first take a look at sponge-filled cartridges. Basically, you fill up a sponge inside a plastic housing with the printer ink. You don't want to fill up one of these cartridges too quickly, because if you do the ink can become blocked and the cartridge won't work properly due to air in the way. If air bubbles or pockets do form, there are a few ways to remedy the problem. Either inject ink slowly from the bottom of the sponge, allowing the ink to rise and push the air out, or simply tap on the side of the cartridge gently to pop the air bubbles.

Then, there are vacuum-retained cartridges. When refilling the tanks of these types of cartridges, it is crucial to create a seal that air cannot pass through after the process. A simple dab of hot glue over the refill hole always does the trick. Before applying the glue, gently squeeze the cartridge to prepare the vacuum. Normally, a little ink will leak from the cartridge, so work over a sink or old towel.

Refilling inkjet cartridges gets easier with time. Be sure to read all the instructions that come with your refill kit and work slowly. The more practice you get, the faster you'll be able to refill your ink cartridges. Most cartridges can be refilled around five times or even more before needing to be replaced. For homes and businesses that print a great deal, this can add up to a substantial savings!
